Bempkins Family Session

If there's one thing I've learned as a Boston family photographer, it's this: kids almost always have a better plan than we do.

This sweet family met me at Old North Bridge for their Central MA family session on a gorgeous fall afternoon. Their oldest daughter showed up with BIG energy, and honestly? I loved it. She wanted to climb every rock, run every trail, and throw approximately one million sticks into the water. Instead of spending the session trying to convince her to stand still and smile (which, let's be honest, is usually a losing battle), we leaned into it.

We followed her lead.

She climbed the rocks. We photographed it. She ran in circles. We joined the fun. She found sticks. We threw sticks. By meeting her where she was instead of where we thought she should be, we built trust instead of resistance.

And here's the funny thing: when it came time to ask for those quieter moments—a snuggle with her little sister, a hug with Mom and Dad, everyone looking at the camera—she was all in. We hadn't spent the last 20 minutes battling her, so she was happy to play along.

It's something I remind parents during almost every session: your kids don't have to "behave perfectly" for beautiful photos. Some of the best images happen when we stop trying to control the moment and start paying attention to who our kids actually are. Their personalities are what you'll want to remember years from now anyway.

This session was full of laughter, movement, muddy shoes, and so much joy. Exactly the kind of fall afternoon kids should have.

If you're looking for a Boston fall family photographer or planning a relaxed Central MA family session, know that your kids don't need to sit still or smile on command. We'll chase the light, embrace the chaos, and create images that feel like your family—exactly as you are.
